Really really quick question on cleaning

Hey guys,

I've read the cleaning guide by caleb, and i'm wondering, since i can't get a magic eraser sponge, i just have regular kitchen sponges with the scratchy things on the back. My keyboard has been really oily, and i've always cleaned everything with a 2 microfiber clothes (1 damp, 1 dry), and it still builds up. Is using a sponge in general recommended, and is using the scratchy part of it on the keyboard acceptable. I have a dv2000 fyi, the case gets fingerprints in like 2 seconds

P.S will using the soft side of a sponge scratch the glossy coating of a dv2000?

dont use the rough side of that sponge, it will act like sandpaper, and will rip your paint right off.
Just use microfibre cloths with a little bit of rubbing alcohol on them, and that will dry the surface right up, and keep the keyboard from getting oily for few hours of use.

The soft side of the sponge may be harmful too. Just stick with the microfibre cloths.
DIfferent weights of microfibre cloths are made. The best ones in my opinion are ones with 4000 TPI or more.
TPI = threads per inch.
I get mine from my optometrist.
The automotive microfibre cloths are junk.

Alright so sponge is out

I've been cleaning once a week with a microfiber cloths, yet the trackpad still feels a bit oily and keyboards just keep collecting oil. Won't the alcohol damage microfiber cloths though? And when you mean few hours, you mean its just a temporary removal, or you'll add on some more, or what?

you are mistaking wear on keyboard with oil. if it's really oil then just wash your hand before using your notebook.

 

Well, the rubbing alcohol dries up the oils on the keyboard. But with use, the oils will build back up again, so you would need to do another cleaning at a later point.

I have been using rubbing alcohol on my micro cloths for years, and never had any problems, or cloth decay. You do not need a lot of rubbing alcohol, only a small amount dabbed on the cloth.

AS BHD mentioned, washing your hands works.

One other thing, if your system has a glossy finish, dont use rubbing alcohol on the painted pieces, cause it will dissolve the clear coat on the paint after a period of time. Just use the rubbing alcohol on the keyboard and touchpad.
