Is there anyway to paint the keys without covering the letters? I thought vinyl dye wasnt supposed to cover paint but pictures I've found of keyboards painted with vinyl dye seem to be completely blacked out...

FYI: My keys are currently silver with black lettering. want to paint them blue but will be ok with white if it makes it easier.(if that matters at all).

One thing of note, is that if you do blank out your keys... you *will* become a better typist.

Or perhaps if there exist places that sell pre-painted keyboards, you could buy one from there?? I remember a few years a go, Alienware used to sell keyboards that matched the colors of their desktops.

Well if hes talking about his Notebook Keyboard then buying an external wouldnt work well on the go
asside from an external ive never heard of painting your keyboard you could always paint over the keys then paint the letters
    it would be very original!

    LostDestiny: lol awesome bleach penguin

OP: You can try using masking tape or masking liquid to cover up the letters when painting. But i guarantee you it wont turn out that well unless done professionally

I'd say the easiest way to redo the lettering on the keys is to get the key stickers/decals from ebay. They are inexpensive, then you can just paint the keys over then apply stickers with a clear backing. Or if you're just trying to restore a worn keyboard then you can just get opaque keyboard replacement stickers, they come in different colors, e.g. black and white.

or simply paint the keys the color you want the letters/symbols to be then apply the stickers (as mentioned above) then paint the keys again (lightly) this time with whatever color you want the rest of the keys to be. let dry then use a xacto knife and carefully peel back the stickers exposing the opposing color underneath for the letters/symbols..

use sem color-kote paint its specifically made for this type of plastic and holds up MUCH better than any dupli-color crap at wal-mart...

I'd just find some very thing decals and paint the keys the color I wanted, apply the decal, then clear coat over the decal. It works pretty good, and the thinner the decal the better it will work.
Hmm.. this pic doesn't show that the decals are cleared over, but they are.

Edit: Here's one that shows how hard it is to tell that they're actually decals, and those are pretty thick decals I used, I'm 100% sure you could find something much thinner for your key board.

You could just paint over everything and re apply the letters/symbols I bet you could find some sort of stamps to do it with.
