i recently bought a zv5000 off ebay and unexpected to me it was owned by a heavy smoker. i really had no idea which section this goes in this one made the most sence to me anyways......... does anyone know an effective way to get rid of this smell iv used compressed air fully cleaned the cooling system cleaned all the plastic parts with rubbing alcohol and dismantled the keyboard and cleaned out all the little hairs and dust and such yet it still smells any ideas i dont really think spraying air freashner into a laptop would be the smartest idea lol.

dunk it in the toilet after you leave a surprise. that way you'll get a new smell. but seriously, try cleaning it with ozium or febreze. i know they're not cleaners but heck it might help.

Cigarette smoke smell is extremely difficult to get rid of. If it were me, I would put the laptop in a sealed plastic bag with a bowl full of fresh cut lemons, or some other ingredient that "eats" bad smells, much like Oust or Febreeze does.

My thinking is that the lemons would kill the smoke scent, and give the laptop a nice fresh smell to it. Other than just leaving the laptop outside in the fresh air for a day or two, I don't know what else to tell you.

garetjax, that's not a bad idea. I think I'd wipe down the exterior with something mild first, blow out the inside with canned air, and then give the machine your lemon treatment.

My son's mother was a heavy smoker. He once brought a nasty smelling old Dell from her place to my house. I wish I'd thought of the your trick. I wiped it down with 409 or something similar and then left the machine to air out in the garage for a few days before I let my boy bring it into the house. Most of the stench had disappeared by then, fortunately.

If you are daring enough you can dismantle it and soak the major parts in (distilled i think) water and such, maybe getting rid of any films, or attempting too.

i think i might try that lemon treatment idea i have cleaned the outside with rubbing alcohol it removed it from the lid cover 100% you cant smell it at all but on the inside yes and also yes i did spray the inside out with air the cooling system in this laptop is easy to get too and all easy yo remove parts like cd drive and such i have taken out and wiped off the film of smoke from. i will dismantle it soon because im upgrading from a radeon 9000 to a 9600 so illn be replacing the motherboard

Let me know how it works out for you guys! If nothing else, just letting the lappie sit outside and "breathe" fresh air always does wonders to bad smells regardless if it's clothes, bedding, or electronics. =)

I think leaving it outside would would be a good thing to do. Obviously keep it from getting rained on , covered in bird stuff, etc. The other methods would probably work but then your laptop would smell like freshener or lemon - I wouldnt like that but that is me.

Maybe your laptop is still addicted? Try sticking a nicotine patch on it.
