Why is it so incredibly difficult to clean my notebook's screen so that there are no telltale signs of cleaner or streaks? I've recently purchased Fellowes "Screen Cleaning Wipes" and Staples "Screen Cleaning Liquid" and I find using either or both of them virtually impossible to eliminate all traces of residue from the products. I can always see a trail of every move I've made with the cloth when I power down the computer or when the angle is just right when it's on. To some it may be no big deal but I'm kind of fanatical about a clean machine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

    Note- The screen is a non-shiny Samsung WSXGA+ on a Dell 8600.

All I ever use is an old white t-shirt, dampened with water. Works for me, and leaves no residue or streaks.

You can also try eye glass cleaner ( I have used it) and or some cleaners available at computer stores work similarly to eye glass cleaners. Also some alcohol from your local grocery will work also-costs about $1

Yes, and if you buy a bottle of eyeglass cleaner from Sam's Club or Walmart Optical you get free refills for life. That plus they will always give you a free microfiber cleaning cloth if you ask (if they have some at the moment)

I know what you mean about streaks sometimes showing up at certain angles even after you thought the screen was crystal-clear, and I agree - it is annoying!

Second bmwrob's suggestion, I use a barely-dampened microfiber dusting cloth (the smooth kind, not the kind that looks like terrycloth), really just barely dampened, and buff softly till every last streak is gone. And it goes without saying - no fingers have ever, ever touched the screen's surface! I am an absolute fanatic about that. I suppose it helps that there are no kidlets running around my house, though :).

First, wipe the screen when the cloth is wet out of the container, then you have to wait until the cleaning cloth is almost dry to clean the screen for the final time to rid of the streaks. Takes a little practice, that's all.

I use a dry, microfibre cleaning cloth first to get rid of dust and then I wipe the screen with the same microfibre cloth dampened with a tiny bit of water. The water "evaporates" as I wipe the dampened cloth accross the screen. It's kinda strange. I use the same dampened cloth to clean the keyboard, lid, scroll pad and to wipe away dust on the ports at the back of the laptop.

I use my glasses-cleaner and it works very well. Not the new fangled blue cleaners but some old good ones.

Yep microfiber cloth is the way to go to clean the dust off the screen and then use my alcohol and water mix to clean away any crud off my screen. Been using this method for years and I have used cleaners that I bought at the local compusa and those have left a horrible film on my screen.

Here a nice linky that I found on powernotebooks.com on cleaning your screen.

Albeit more expensive than your regular household solutions, I bought from Bestbuy the Monster screenclean spray w/microfiber cloth. It works perfectly for my laptops and my flatpanels!!!

Edit: I went to the sony store here in Manhattan and it costs 19.99....

Just picked up a lenscleaner kit from Sam's Club- 2 oz spraybottle, 8 oz refill, 2 microfiber cloths, 10 moist lens cleaner wipes, and an eyglass tool for $2.99. Oh yeah, unlimited free refills.

    Safe for all coatings...

I will not recommend any so-called screen cleansers. It is just a bad bussiness trick. Read ur notebook manual to clean the screen.
I will recommend to use a soft barely-dampened microfiber cloth and clean the screen smoothly and then let it air dry for few minutes.( As suggested by some others here).
I will never use any cleanser, they might damge your screen.

EDIT: I mean it for Glossy one. Don,t know about Matte, but should be similar as both are infact same except for a coating on Glossy that makes it more delicate.

Suggestions for cleaning the Vaio TX screen. It's not like my toshiba. It's got a shiny glassy looking display on it.

Just go with a good microfiber cloth, barely damp like said above. Actually I find that you can get good moisture from condensation from your breath (you know like breathing on your car window and drawing pictures when you were yonger)

There are cleaners made to clean glossy screens. Some of you might be scared to use them, but they've worked for me. Make sure they don't have alcohol or ammonia. Don't use a paper towel. I use www.pixelclean.com , but there are more than just that one. Google search, but research the product carefully before purchasing...if you intend to purchase at all.

If you dampen your microfiber cloth with water, make sure it's distilled water, unless you want calcium residues and other stuff from water to build up on your screen. You know, the rough stuff left over when tap water evaporates...
Of course, you won't die if you use tap water, but since this is a thread for screen fanatics, you may as well use distilled water.

I definitely wouldnt use rubbing alcohol if I were you. From what I've heard, any solvent can damage the pixels, (at least if its matte finish, not a glossy screen).
    PMZ
PS--However, all I do is turn off my computer and take a soft cloth (like a glasses-cloth), get it wet, and wipe the screen carefully. Works just fine.

You can buy cheap static free dry or wet cleaning cloths at staples or a store like it. Cleaning Glossy screens are a breeze.

It seems WSXGA+ screens are extremely hard to clean, but listen to the previous posters. Eye glass cleaner.
