I recently had an idea for a new alienware laptop.
Why don't they custom engrave designs into the body and finish it with a metal powder coat!
I saw this before on a ibanez limited edition guitar with custom design from HR Giger.

LOL, you're talking about aesthetics; I though you had a suggestion about function?
In any event, I like just the opposite: I like my things understated; and AW has a lot of ostentatiousness just as it is. Still, I understand their intended demographic, so and as long as it's a custom option, I have no problem with it.
On the other hand, how do they incorporate their AW logo into your guitar theme? -
I don't think the OP is referring to a guitar theme. They are referring to something that is kind of like HP's Imprint design language. However, instead of doing it like HP does, Dell could just engrave designs into the casing of their Alienware design of computers and seal it with a powder coat.
There is one flaw to this idea though. In an order for Dell to do that with Alienware computers, the chassis would have to be composed of some sort of alloy, as opposed to the ABS plastic cases they use now. This would drive the cost of Alienware notebooks even higher since the materials would cost more.
Personally, I like the design of the older Alienware notebooks. I'm talking about before Dell bought them. Take a look at the late 2002 release of the Area 51m. That was quite the sexy notebook. Especially with the color-shifting paint job. I believe that particular case design was used until a few years ago when Dell introduced the Skullcap design to Alienware computers. -
The m17x now is aluminum alloy
-
Oh. Well that's news to me. I still like the old case design though. The newer designs are too bulky.

ground metal painting
then click images -

i can easily remove it and why would i need to let it cure ??
The process involves grinding nothign else -
A cool idea, but I think it'll all come down too price and demand. How many people would want the option to customize the outside? Alot probably, but then how many would still want it if it costs more on an already expensive machine?
Would be cool though if it could be done. I actually think the new alienware designs look better than the old ones, very sleek, but still way too "look at me!". But I do agree that they are way too bulky now (M15x I'm looking at you). Was never a fan of the skullcap design, but each too their own! -
they have to be bulky for the cooling
there is a reason for everything ..... -
-
If I remember right, the previous M15x had it right (ignoring component issues and poor build quality). Seemed to be fairly portable, discrete and integrated GPU for half decent battery life, and inbuilt optical drive. If only they had made the new M15x like this! I would have one in a heart beat.
On an interesting note, a recent Dell blog post has hinted at a new portable Alienware system being announced at CES 2010. I'm hoping they've realised that they need at release a portable unit for all us frequent travellers out there in need of some grunt with a little bit of battery life when on the road.
Back on topic, as an aftermarket option, the custom case design would be awesome. You could have an understated, classy colour/design for a business machine. Or some crazy colourful design for a hardcore gamer. -
AW doesn't make any notebook. they outsource everything. compare the ocz whitebook with the M17. the AW tax includes (among loads of other crapware) the imo ugly skullcap design.
My idea for a new alienware laptop
