This can be done with any laptop in which the LCD is attached to separate brackets and the actual hinges are attached to the plastic cover.
This is a horrible design as many know already because if the plastic breaks your LCD is left hanging (literally).

It can also be done well with almost any mag alloy lid, however I've found that the d830 lid has 2 threaded nuts built into the lid that fit holes on the gt627 hinges.

I don't feel like fully explaining the process as I did it quite a while ago and took pretty good pics. Note that I didn't use a bezel or pay any attention to cosmetics whatsoever, using random pieces of backplates for the nuts on the back of the lid. This could easily be refined to look somewhat more elegant.

One thing I did wrong was run the LCD cable leftwards of where it forks into the inverter and data cable, I should have cut a notch right were it forks to give it enough length.

All I can say is, its SOLID.
The only tool I used was a dremel 300 with a tungsten carbide drill bit. Cheap cordless drills will be clunky and wear out here folks.
Next I'll be doing the same with an Precision m4400 lid.

    Enjoy:

Good job on the hinge mod, some laptops really need overhauled hinges in order to be more reliable and not end up useless chunks of plastic
