    hey all,

now many of you may have already seen the laptop that i have modded to a plain ultra gloss black calling it the phantom (new pics yet to be uploaded), the only thing that makes it look ugly now is the greased up keypad...

is there any way i can clean off those stains, coz they seriously piss me off, and i don't see the point of getting a new keypad when this one works perfectly.... and a new keyboard would set me off about a 100 USD where i am...

plus, i'm still waiting for people to help me with some TRIBAL ARTWORK that i maybe able to do myself at home...

the help will be greatly appreciated

I just use some lcd screen cleaning spray to clean my keyboard.

It is gentle enough not to damage the letters on the keys.

Spray it on the a cloth not on the keyboard.

if you want you can make an 50/50 mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol.

    regards

    John

Isopropyl alcohol cleans everything on my laptop except my screen. On my screen, alcohol seems to just spread the oil from fingerprints. Rubbing it down with a damp cloth (tap water) picks up the oil nicely.

an air compressor or backpack leaf blower is good. Just make sure the computer is off. For really dirty keyboards, I use my 10horsepower fradan walk behind blower. It decelops 4100cfm of air volume at 220mph. It not only cleans your keyboard, but literally rips the loose keys out of it.

You can just buy one of those compressed air cartridge things from a staples store, and it will work fine.

I use the same method. Ended up with a nice G imprinted on the side of my face.

thanks again k-tron, but my keypad is clean enough that way, no dust or anything stuck between the keys, i'm asking of the grease/oil (if they are that) stains that usually stick on to your keys giving them that ugly shine. thanks for the help though

So you may think I'm crazy, but my little bro spilled juice on his laptop, so I took the keyboard off and ran it under hot water for several minutes (I can't recall, but we may have taken the keys off), used a light scrubber and then dried everything with a blow dryer (make sure it's completely dry). After all was said and done, worked like brand new.

...sanding your keys, perhaps? I visualize someone sitting there with each individual key and a little piece of sandpaper scrubbing away...not only the 'polish' that has been added to your keys, but also the stickers the character stickers.

    ...so yeah, a little funny.

I wouldnt go to the extreme of sanding the keyboard, but I dont think cleaning the keyboard will have any effect.

If you look closely the keyboard has a grainy texture. On the keys where you feel there is an oil buildup, the texture has gone smooth. Its not an oil buildup, its just where the keys have worn down with lots of use over time.

Only way round it is a new keyboard if it bothers you that much TBH.

A shiny keyboard is a mark of pride. If the letters are faded, even moreso. ;)
