Specifically the one in my sig, which is nothing besides shiny plastic.
I've heard over the years to not use anything with ammonia in it (Windex), or alcohol, but I also remember that only being a rule against LCD screens... maybe because they were Matte?
Anyway, I've found that the only thing that cleans my laptop good enough is either or of the two I said above; and no, water doesn't work after a while.

Ammonia and alcohol are fine for glass, not so fine for plastics. Fortunately I found that Pledge Multi Surface works fine for me. I've used it since I bought my HDX with no deleterious effects. It's an expensive cleaner, but a little goes a lone way.
BTW, it helps not to let your laptop get too dirty. I'm still in the clean it ever other day phase.
p.s. be sure and spray the cloth, not your laptop. -
I tried not cleaning it for a week, which caused me to make this thread to begin with >.>;
Never again D:
I'll look into the Pledge though, hopefully it's not too ridiculous in price. -
What I find works best is grab some kleenix or bath tissue, dampen it, wring out the water and then gently wipe down the LCD. Follow with dry soft tissue to dry or a micro fiber cloth.
Always works for me and never had an issue (3 laptops and desktop LCD). No need to purchase cleaning products for the LCD.
EDIT: Just noticed you mentioned water doesnt work for you... -

I use "Eye Glass Cleaner"
2 per week clean both LCD screen and Keyboard and Surface -

I use soap and water. A $0.99 small short bristled paint brush works well to loosen dirt in those grooves and inbetween the keys.

My way of cleaning all my LCD screens:
I burn through Windex like crazy so I just used an empty bottle to hold the solution:
Solution
1 part Distilled Water. Reason: doesnt leave any streaks.
1 part isopropyl alcohol. Reason: Helps remove any fingerprints, grease, or dirt w/o causing any damage.
Mix 1/2 and 1/2.
Cloth
At walmart in the automotive section they have these 6 packs of large microfiber cleaning cloths. Costs around $7 for the pack.
First, I blow my screens w/ air before I start because I cleaned a notebook of mine a couple years ago that had a small amount of dirt on it. Scratched the hell out of it.
Then I wipe the dust off the screen with a cloth dampened with solution and check to see out it looks. 90% of the time im done. If there are still prints or marks I spray the cloth then wipe across the entire area untill it is gone. Then I wipe with a dry cloth to remove any access solution.
Thats my way of doing it but asking someone how to clean a LCD screen is like asking whats the best way to catch a fish. Your going to read a bunch of different ways of because there is no set in stone way of doing it. If you want to know the correct way of cleaning your particular LCD screen check the manual. -

For the lcd screen i use my eyeglasses cloth.
For the laptop itself, I have hp and covered it with a sticker of pink-diamonds -
Memorex OptiScreen cleaner - it came with a microfiber cleaning cloth, and it is alcohol free.
I have a super shiny Asus eebook and also a just as shiny HP dv7t....
Not sure if this link will work forever but it was the best pic I could find:
