    Hello all,

I bought my dell 640 m back in 2006, and its running as good as ever...

no problems till date *touch wood* and its fairly powerful as well -

1.6 ghz - c2d, 250 gig hd (upgraded recently), bluetooth, 1440 900 screen, 2 gigs of ram, etc etc..

I don't want to sell this trusty old piece of hardware, since it runs everything great till date.

My only complaint is that it lacks a built in mic, which is seriously annoying, since I have to run around to find my old mic to connect it to the microphone port.

Is there a way that i can mod the laptop to build a microphone inside it ?

Any ideas would be very helpful.

    Thanks,
    Amol

Yeah...this isn't happening. I suggest you consider getting a small USB mic you can keep with the laptop.

Is there no way to buy a spare power button or something that has a mic built in ? I just really hate the fact that dell didnt include a mic inside the laptop !

As others have said, unless you are extremely good at repairing electronics, it is going to be very difficult. You might be able to stuff a small mic inside, but how are you going to connect it to the sound card ? if you directly solder it to the mic jack from inside then it will be sort of a permanent fix (you wont be able to connect external mics) also if you dont do it carefully you can end up damaging the motherboard !!!.

If you are concerned about the size of the mic then get a tiny one like the following (it is so small you might even be able to keep it plugged in all the time).

or if you don’t like wires then get a Bluetooth headset.
