Generally speaking do laptop hinges have a plastic covering purely for appearance?

I can see metal bars behind this plastic so I assume it feeds through and acts as the grunt of opening, lifting and maintaining my open laptop, the plastic feels kinda weak and moves up and down when pressed down on, that doesn't effect the metal part of the hinges or the life of my laptop does it?

You're right, it is just a covering.

Yep, I'm surprised I wasn't banned for that endless supply of threads about the same thing.

the whole reason I bought a new notebook was to escape from the paranoia, the Sony still functions great but the self-deteriorating BARRELS were driving me nuts, lets hope this Asus doesn't start giving me stick. :p  ;)
