Does anyone else use the Dvorak layout?
I've used it at work on and off for the past year, I decided to swap out my netbook's keyboard to force myself to memorize it. Definitely more comfortable, but frustrating as I haven't memorized all the key locations yet

I haven't gotten the guts to pluck keys from my studio's backlit keyboard yet...

I've been really interested in this, but am worried about how long it would take for me to become acclimated to the new layout. Just out of curiosity, how would you say your typing speed compares to the standard layout?

If you can live with the first two weeks or so of frustration it is definitely worth the trouble. The Dvorak layout really is better than QWERTY. It's just that people don't want to change.

Right now my typing speed is painfully slow-but I am making progress. Not to mention I'm re-learning something I haven't had to think about for years.....on a 9.25" keyboard. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment :p

As an added bonus pretty much NO ONE will ask to use your computer, and when they try to their expression is priceless!

Ugh, I'd hate to switch. True, it probably is better once you are used to it, but the years I've spent on old QWERTY is going to really make me hate DVORAK for the first few weeks.

I can touch type on a QWERTY layout at 90-some words per minute. I really have no reason to change.

But how much do you type, and does the QWERTY layout cause your hands to cramp after a while?

Not really. But if I ever had a lot of free time, I'd like to try the same thing. Maybe with an external Dvorak keyboard.

    Pretty cool though :)

DVORAK user here. I started about two months ago and now my dvorak typing speed has surpassed my qwerty speed. I could only get about 60 on qwerty, but I easily top 70 on dvorak. Plus, my fingers don't make loud popping sounds at the end of typing sessions.

I use qwerty and primarily use my ring, middle, and pointer finger on both hands for 95% of the key strokes.. I find the standard method of typing too cramped. Sometimes I hit the "h" key with my left pointer and sometimes I hit the "h" key with my right pointer.. or maybe another finger. I type at about 100 wpm last that I checked. What is really helpful though is the little bumps that tell you where your hands are on the keyboard.. those nubs on the "f" and "j" key. :D

I've heard about dvorak but it would be a nuisance for me personally to have to switch typing methods from home computer to school/work computer. An external dvorak keyboard would be a neat solution to that though.

You'll be surprised at what the human body is capable of. I now type proficiently on both DVORAK and QWERTY. It did take two months of practice.

It's just like looking at a girl for the first time when you are in first grade. Looks like you, but just a little different. Hair is longer. Pink instead of blue. Stretchy pants instead of blue jeans.

Don't be scared little boy. She won't bite.

    Yeah alright...

I dont do change.. That is not the standard keyboard, so no need to learn it at this point in time.
Is that a better response..

Maybe if i could get it on external keyboard, might be worth a try, but i am not going to switch out my QWERTY laptop keyboard for that. The whole computer would wind up thrown at the wall... :O

I cant even find a external KB with Dvorak... Well not on ebay... and even google is not really coming back with that many hits, so really you tell me.

No need for external keyboard. Just use the software to change layouts. Then buy the $3 stickers to place on your keyboard.
