Glossy surfaces aren't that practical with a truly mobile laptop, because of its reflective properties. Thats why I only go for fully matte systems.

Don't judge a notebook by its cover. As long as a notebook performs great, I'm happy, glossy or no. What I do hate is when notebook manufacturers focus more on making a pc look pretty than giving it quality components. The average consumer ends up paying for an attractive machine, but that beauty is only skin deep. The internals are either last generation or of poor quality. It's what is on the inside that counts, and I expect nothing but the best for my money.
I purposely went the cliche route.
NOTE: I didn't specify as to which brands I was referring to, but I'm sure each of you can think of a few that fit the bill.
P.S.- 16:9...no thank you. -
It's not about beauty, it's about being able to read the screen vs. only being able to use it as a (pretty crappy) mirror...
Hell, when I'm on the train I can barely read my fully dimmed matte screen sometimes... A glossy one? No chance, even with full brightness and all the LED backlighting in the world. -
Yeah it's unfortunate, but a natural progression of corporate greed. Why target a group that does productive work on notebooks when u can also target a group 3x larger and force the former to also buy it if they have no choice?
Economics and human nature at work. Same goes for 16:9 inch vs 16:10. -
I don't really care about the glossy trend but I think they look nicer than those matte screens but I hate the fingerprints as mentioned before! I have to clean it up every second day.

i never had to clean my laptop so far, so glossy sucks.. useless shinyness that makes it sensible so that you have to clean it all day long. doesn't help at all.
-
I get that people associate shiny with new, but why spend more time cleaning the surfaces then using the product? Not to mention glossy looks cool at the un-boxing, but doesn't help the wow factor in the stores where 100+ people have touched the comp before you.
-
The only glossy part I don't like on my notebook is the palmrests, more so since both of my hard drives are in them, causing heat, makes sweat, causes stickyness and it just ends up looking rather dirty after a few hours.
Like the glossy screen though. -
I have more of a neutral opinion. While I like how glossy screens seem to have more vibrant colours, I also like how there's barely any glare on my matte screen.
Although I do envy how easy it is to clean those edge-to-edge glass screens though. They seem like you can clean them with anything whereas with matte, some cleaning agents may dissolve the coating. -
As for the glossy screen, they have a legitimate function: they make the colors pop!--and produce a much more vibrant picture.
Besides, if you don't like the glossy screen you can always purchase a mat to tone it down. However, the same cannot be said for the reverse. -
I so hate gloss... fingerprint magnets... yuck
-

I hate the gloss. Fingerprints get everywhere. I prefer brushed steel looks great
-
I dont like glossy screens because of blicks and dont like glossly surfaced laptops: that's why i sold my HP DV 7T.
it made me feel like a "barbie boy".
matte finish is the best! even apple does so in their aluminium macbooks. -
I prefer the sleek non-glossy business class. Zero glare, no finger prints, sleek looking imho, and function over form. The last glossy computer I had was the HP tx2510us and it was great, but ran hot and was kinda embarrassing to take around as I felt like a 20 something shouldn't be using a toy like laptop with weird designs and reflective exterior.
-
For my laptop which I carry around frequently, I'm glad it's has a matte finish everywhere, because fingerprints can still show up on the ThinkPad's rubberized lid. It would be much worse if it was glossy.
On the other hand, the only thing I'm missing to round out my home theater is a piano. -
So buy a piano with a matte finish... there must be someone out there that builds pianos that look like Thinkpads
-
-
Any time I move my speakers to get behind my TV stand, I have to wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. Considering I carry my laptop almost every day, I'm glad ThinkPads don't have glossy lids. -
Do not like it..... Hate it come to think of it.
I just dont like the fact you can see EVERYTHING on them.... My PSP and PS3 are the same way. They have swirl marks on them, because i try to hard to keep them clean...Same thing with the HP Laptop.... I do not like the glossy screens, Matte all the way for me..
That is why i now own a Latitude..... NO GLOSS...
Do you like the current high gloss consumer laptop trend?
