I recently had a chat with a dells sales agent who helped with a couple questions. I asked if i painted my XPS M1530 if it would void my warranty. He said no, however if something happens to my system because of the paint job it would not be cover. So lets say i get paint inside the machine and it causes problems with the CPU or GPU. Then they will not fix my machine. Im just worried that if i paint it, they will try blaming any problems that may occur on me, even it was or was not my fault

well i think it would be fairly easy to determine if any faults were caused by the paint or not (if they occur).

well i guess you could open the service hatch and see if paint has gotten inside or similar.
although, if you take care while painting, and make sure to mask off all the gaps etc, i don't think you should encounter any such problems. -
It will be just like people who add aftermarket parts to their cars and then go in for work at their dealer: They will blame anything, and everything on the new parts (paint here).
You may have a different experience but they nearly always find a way to blame you. Perhaps they decide it was caused by excess heat caused by the paint over the normal plastic. You can fight but I can't see getting far with a company like Dell unless you go to court. At least with a car there are experts not related to the company.
Good luck! -
why would you get paint inside? you need to take it totally apart to paint it so you will only have plastic in front of you when you paint...if your not going to do it right dont do it at all.

Agreed, disassemble it to paint. You will get better results that way.
I don't have enough posts to link it, but thread 193815 titled "XPS 1530 Service Manual" should have the disassembly instructions.
In my experience, as long as you don't cause the damage during the painting, or the paint causes and issue in some way (blocking fan vents or something), you should have no warranty issue.
If you are really worried about it, buy another set of plastics and paint those.
