Ok, guys, not sure anyone will know any possibilities here or solutions I can try, but here it goes:

I bought my hp dv6t-7000 last june before entering college. I lived with this machine and we've been through a lot together. I added an msata drive as boot drive (windows+select programs). I was using it a couple of months after the upgrade and I hit a key (g or h I think) and heard a sort of pop and my backlit went out. At first I thought I was screwed. I had been running BOINIC so it had been working pretty hard for long periods of time and had been "up" for 90+% of the time for maybe 5 days in a row. I figured it was a heat thing, or something of that nature that caused a failure.

Then I noticed it still lights up, every time I boot my laptop, a VERY faint glow can be seen behind my keys, I hit the backlit button and it goes dark, hit it again: faint light. I had to open her back up in May anyway (BAD BAD bios update bricked my machine (what luck!)) and I wanted to upgrade the wifi card. I fiddled with the ZIF connector, but no luck, the keyboard does the same thing with only very faint light.

Any hope I can fix this thing or do I need to hop on ebay and dish out $70 bucks?

You probably need a new keyboard. It looks like you can get a backlit one shipped from China for $40. Don't spend $70, that is way too much for any laptop keyboard.

Alright, i was hoping i could try soldering something in the keyboard or something equally stupid and simple before dishing out the bucks. Thanks for pointing out the cheaper option, do you know if it is generic or is it the same part. If you've bought one from a similar vendor i would appreciate the input (don't want to end up with a worse typing experience to get by back light back)

Taking apart a keyboard isn't impossible, but it's very delicate. I'm not sure it's worth the bother unless you are in a position where you have no choice.

You'll have to ask the seller about the specific keyboard they are offering.
