I have a presario 2500 and the external port does support the external monitor. However there is nothing on the external only on notebook screen. It appears that f5 has the monitor availability.
my manual says possibility external monitor not detected because BIOS. Says try setting video display device to both in system devices menu.
I have dual boot to windows and Debian and this is merely FYI.
If you can help me please be so kind as to give me a step by step
    Thank you

Umm, when your computer is loading the bios, go into setup (F2 or F12 or something, it should prompt you somewhere) and look around for something related to external monitors. If they're disabled, enable them.

If that doesn't work, wait for someone who knows what they're doing to help you.

For my laptop, I have to press the 'fn' key in addition to f7 to change LCD settings.

Otherwise, you could try enable a second monitor through window's desktop settings.
