17.3 screen on 15.6 laptop

Say, I was looking over at my gf's gt780, and took a ruler to measure it's screen. The width would as wide as my gx660 (so it'd eat up the front screen bezel, and a bit of the top).

Though my lvds cable can fit it, how would I happen to fasten it if the screws don't line up? I was thinking of applying tons o' double sided tape or even delve into some epoxy.

Just an interesting thought of having a big screen on my 15.6, lol.

 

your notebook must have a HUGE bezel if you think you will fit a 17 in there. Obviously it would be unlikely for the screws to line up so double sided tape is probably your best bet. you will likely need a rotary tool to remove anything which is in the way as well as make the hole in the bezel larger.

Why don't you take some pictures of the assembly with the bezel off?
It really depends on the particular way its assembled.

Recently I modified a lid to fit a different laptops hinges and LCD brackets. Not quite the same, but I can tell you I did NOT bother with epoxy and double sided tape, that would have been totally futile.
I assume when you say the LCD is as wide as your gx660, you mean the LCD is barely smaller than the plastic on either side? This is really a big problem. Say you mounted it on the plastic with screws, where are the hinges/brackets going to go?

Anyway not to be the voice of discouragement. If there is really enough clearance then of course it is possible, but at a certain point it really is easier to adapt a different metal lid or just a piece of metal. Depending again on how it is currently meant to fit and function.

If the LCD brackets and hinges are in 1 piece for each side, then it will almost be a piece of cake. Meaning, if the lid is not necessary to actually mount the LCD or hinges, you could potentially bend them outwards a little and only have to drill 2-4 holes for the mounting.

There is unfortunately a small possibility that it just wont work for some internal reason. I'm suspicious of the cables being different, there might be a pin or 2 that denote something about the size, you have the gt780 cable if you decide to try it. The gt680 and gt780 apparently share the same motherboard, but there is no gx760.
A 17" screen would light up but not display anything on my old 15.4" clevo m860tu.

I think you should by all means try it if your particularly motivated or if you have good 1 piece metal hinge/brackets like I described.

hmm, Alright, ditching the epoxy/double sided tape idea.
Time to use the drill again I guess.

Vertical clearance is no problem, but horizontal wise, i've got only around 0.3 inches clearance.

Though I wouldn't mind if the screen would be "borderless" (aluminum areas showing) lol.

I've got an extra pair of hinges/brackets from my old gateway fx (forgot what exact kind) fx 17 incher.

I admire the dedication, but feel you should at least use a 16" chassis to be safe.
