Hi, I have searched everywhere online, and found no solution to doing this.

I never use my optical drive on my laptop, and im' sure by removing it, i'd save batt life.

    I have HP DV2220us

Does anyone know of a way to replace the open slot on the CD/DVD optical drive to a storage compartment?

Any and all ideas are appreciated!

If by "storage compartment" you mean put an additional hd in there, i have a feeling it won't work. Best bet would be to take a couple flash drives, stick it in where the hd used to be, and get a couple usb extensions to link into your usb ports...

If by "storage compartment" you mean just an empty slot where you can put... packs of gum or w.e, I wouldn't advise it cause w.e you make your storage compartment with, may end up burning or melting or just interfering with the overall heat in the notebook system. If you do take your optical drive out, remember to cover it so that junk doesnt get into your computer and ruin your motherboard or anything.

Well i don't necessarily want to put anything in there, i just want to take it out, since i never use it. it would make the laptop lighter and give me extra 1-5% batt life (which is crucial for me).

Are their plastic covers available/constructable that i could cover the empty slot with?

oh ok... i don't think you can buy a plastic cover. i mean not many people want to get rid of their optical drives. An optical drive doesnt contribute THAT much to the weight of a notebook, and if you simply disconnect, or even snip off the wires that connect the optical drive to the motherboard, it won't eat any battery life. I would say, remove the optical drive, remove all wires and perhaps if you can remove the disk reader without any problems, you could do that too. and then you'll have a piece of plastic that used to be an optical drive as the cover of the empty space (im assuming you have a pop-out optical drive not one of those fancy disc eating ones)
