How does the student discounts work? Kinda new at them. Do they only cover certain notebooks or all of them. And how do they verify that your're a student/teacher/government worker?

Student discounts vary widely from one manufacturer to another. If you had a specific manufacturer or vendor in mind, please post it and someone will be able to give you a more detailed response.

Well, I'm thinking off either an HP 4000 or a Dell Insperation 9300. Can the student discount be applied with another discount? ($500 off)

HP's education discount is usually on the order of 5%. Dell frequently has an education site devoted to your college or university. That said, the prices for Dell on the home or small business are often better than the discount offered through your college or university portal. Generally speaking, student discounts are not stackable with other coupons and discounts.

I don't know anything about Sony's discount program, or if any even exists.

Edit: You can find out more about HP's educational discount at http://government.hp.com/index.asp and Dell's discount at http://www1.us.dell.com/content/segmenter.aspx/pub?c=us&cs=2684&l=en&s=pub

Apple offers student discounts although the amount varies between product lines. I got 13% off a Cinema Display that way.

When I asked a guy from dell, he said that students get a 5% discount and $79 CDN for 3 yrs of warrenty.

I looked at my university's website for laptops, though maybe they weren't discounted they were extremely expensive as they were 400 - 500 more than their MSRP.
