I agree--if this sale had started yesterday instead of today, I may have bought this HD instead of the WD5000BEKT I ordered yesterday from Newegg for roughly the same price.

Very nice deal . . . I also bought a WD5000BEKT; two weeks ago it was $73 or so. I would have been tempted to get the Samsung at this price.

    sweet.

thats not a sale btw thats just their new price on it.

It probably means they will carry the 750 gb 7200 rpm drive soon.

Newegg's $64.99 price for the Samsung Spinpoint HM640JJ 640GB 7200RPM hard drive apparently was not a new regular price, but a sale price that has regrettably just reverted to its previous regular price of $89.99 after only 2 days at the lower price. As of this writing, Newegg's general page for hard drives still shows the $64.99 price for the Samsung HM640JJ HD, but the page specific to it shows the $89.99 price, plus $0.99 shipping. I performed a faux order, adding the HM640JJ to the shopping cart from the general HD page, and check-out showed the higher price and (low) shipping charge. Those who ordered it at the lower price certainly got a nice HD at a great price.

[I discovered the price reversion when I was emailing a note to Newegg asking if they would forego the 15% restock fee if I returned unharmed the WD5000BEKT HD I just ordered to buy the Samsung HM640JJ in its stead; before emailing the note, I decided to check Newegg's site for the HM640JJ to make sure the lower price was still valid.]

It came from Newegg yesterday afternoon. I used SuperDuper and Winclone to copy OSX and Win XP from my old HDD (320GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar); took about 3 hrs total. I dropped the Samsung in my laptop, fired it up and things worked without a hitch (so far); I didn't even need to re-activate Win XP.

The only negative I've noticed, so far, is it is a little bit louder than the Hitachi; no extra vibration though. The sound is almost like the fans kicked up a notch but the sound is definitely coming from the right side palm rest (HDD is under there); it is more noticible right now because I am in a room with no ambient noise. Nothing I can't live with.

I'll try to run HD tune, or something later and post the results.
