Plus B&H doesn't charge tax, or at least they didn't last time I ordered from them. Pretty sure they still don't.

do yuthink these sales are for good or temporary? I read an article that Samsung was trying to liquidate some stock and reduce production to keep prices from dropping.

With the sales we have been seeing recently on SSDs of all brands it feels like they are going to be for good. I can't believe that just last year we were begging for SSD price to be $1/GB and now we regularly see sales that put them under $0.70/GB, even on the best SSD brands

What is going on is the public is being trained to buy on sale only, so when the price goes back up and the sale ends SSD sales drop like a rock. Everyone knows to wait another week or 2 and it will go on sale again. With there being about 3 to 5 top players selling these and putting them on sale we now pretty much all know how much to spend.

Sure, maybe a few people just pop in and buy these at regular price but most people who are doing this, opening their computer and doing this type of mod are not the regular neophyte who can't even upgrade his own memory etc.

Bottom line is this: These sale events are DRIVING the sales of the SSD drives now, that is why they are going on sale every other week.

You can look at the average sale price as the regular price now. All the top sellers know this and that is why they put these drives on sale so often now.

The manufacturer might not like it but they are still making a profit so what are they going to do? They are well aware of price trends and they know the price per MB is not going back above 1.00/MB unless they do something drastic with prices.

While this is a possibility I doubt it will happen. I think at .70 or less per MB they are still making $$ or they would have put a stop to these constant sales a while ago.

I have a friend who owns a local computer shop and he buys 10 to 20 of these drives every time they pop up for under 1.00/MB because he charges 50.00 per install for them. Lots of times people will do memory or OS upgrades also so he gets to charge even more some times.

He has 3 to 5 computers on his shelves waiting for SSD installs plus other upgrades at all times. He charges them what his cost is for the SSD including shipping, he does not even mark them up, he just makes his 50 bucks plus per install/upgrade and does tons of business, any where form 1 to 5 per day in this small town area we live. He runs ads in Craigslist for the upgrade and also relies on word of mouth. He has a waiting list of people who will not crack open their own laptop under any circumstances but will pay him to do it.

He just ordered another 20 of these drives from this latest Sale on tiger a few hrs ago. The larger drives are actually more popular for his laptop upgrades due to lots of laptops not having room for 2 drives.

He does more desktop upgrades with the 120 gig versions because they hold more then one drive.

If you lived in NY, you'd be charged tax from B&H. Since you're in FL, which is where TigerDirect is based, you have to pay tax there. I do as well because they have locations in IL.

I think it's a bit of a marketing/sales test to be honest. What is a tolerable price point. Eventually people will stop gobbling them up on sale, and then they will be forced to drop the price more because people will no longer jump on the "deal". I wouldn't doubt if this time next year the "aging" models will consistently be ~ $0.50/GB.
