    Netbooks really killed U110.

I'm sure that ultra-portables like the IdeaPad U110 and even Toshiba Portege R500 (anything 12.1" or smaller) have been hit pretty hard by netbooks. If all someone needs is a thin/light system to access email and internet on the road, netbooks are very attractive at 1/3 the cost or less!

For me, the power of a dual-core processor and the higher resolution display of the U110 are worth $999 rather than a netbook...but it has some luxuries that many don't need...or don't want to pay for! :D

Interestingly, I just ordered a Dell Inspiron Mini 12 for my best friend to use as his email/internet terminal. He travels Mon-Fri for work and has a ThinkPad T61p for work, but just needed something very portable and didn't require much power....and I got a new one for $340 from the Dell Outlet...

Well, a 12.1" laptop is noticeably bigger than a netbook. The U110's chassis looks like it is exactly the same size as a netbook, I've compared them in person. Since it is a low-processing ultraportable, I think you will be doing the exact same tasks on this compared to a netbook. But besides the poor 4200RPM drive, that price is superb and resolution is really the biggest selling point. Haven't researched it at all though, but they were selling it here in stores for $2000ish.. well, all 11.1" laptops are $2000ish. So that is a great price.

I disagree about the processing power and multi-tasking ability being comparable to a netbook. Case in point-

Lenovo IdeaPad U110 vs. IdeaPad S10 (netbook)

    wPrime 32M- U110: 52sec S10: 127sec
    PCMark05- U110: 3445 S10: 1446

For perspective, the IdeadPad U330 (2.0GHz P7350, ATI 3450, 2GB RAM, 5400rpm HD) ran wPrime 32M in 38.2sec and has a PCMark05 score of 4224 (using the Intel X4500 graphics only). So the U110 is much closer to a real notebook than a netbook, in terms of performance.

I agree the the CPU is best the reason for buying. The dual core CPU kills the little Atom. But then, most of what you'd do on a 11 inch laptop could be done on a 11 inch netbook (which will soon be all over the market). The dual would be awesome for multi-tasking but it's hard to justify it for $500 more.

I didn't say the processing power is comparable to a netbook -- I said you will be doing the same tasks - web browsing, watching movies, etc. The Core 2 ULV 1.6 GHz is weak so you probably won't be doing tasks like video encoding, etc. very comfortably on an ultraportable. Lenovo isn't advertising the product as such either.

Point taken. The U110 was introduced before the netbook explosion, too. The Dell Mini 10 is now available with a 10.1" 1366x768 display for well under $500. Even at $999, the U110 really doesn't make much sense anymore...

Interesting, I didn't know the Mini 10 will be coming with a 1366x768 display. I would buy the U110 though if I had a lot of extra money to spend. It is afterall, a luxury notebook. Besides, I love the 11.1" over the 10.2", but Microsoft has restrictions that won't allow manufacturers to sell netbooks in 11.1", even though the chassis looks the same.
