It's not exactly a secret that paid AV software is better than free AV software and if you're too skimpy to pay a merely $25 for some software well...

Providing a actual "working link" to the deal you are referring to is always very helpful! :)

It was a one day deal, I should have mentioned that at least, to be fair.

I think this is not exactly the best deal around, especially if you have a Fry's Electronics store near you. Fry's very often have the Kaspersky Antivirus 2010 (3 user license version) going for FREE after Mail-in Rebate. Of course, the only amount of money you have to pay in this case is the sales taxes, envelope, stamps, etc. ;) The only bad thing about these mail-in rebates is that they take at least 2 months to reach your hands. :(

    yeahh....

sales tax and mail-in rebates along with spending gas money sounds worse than buying this on newegg.

I dunno. I don't believe in paying $25 for a service I don't need. Saying I'm too "skimpy" or "skimping" on a paid antivirus would be valid if antivirus programs like Avira and MSE didn't do their jobs as well as the paid antiviruses do. But not only do I rarely get viruses if ever, but when I have in the past, all the free ones I used did and continue to do the job just fine. I've tried ones like Norton (pirated with one year license and updates) and Kaspersky with free after rebate 1 year deals. I either found no difference (Kaspersky) or that they were incorrigible resource hogs (Norton).

I don't wanna bristle any feathers here. I think it's a clear case of each to his own. I've read several tech articles in the past that showed that not only were paid antiviruses not much different from their paid counterparts, they along with their free counterparts were actually in some studies shown to be lagging despite growing threats worldwide.

Until I can find a recent, conclusive study showing that paid antiviruses are somehow more effective at catching viruses and malware, I think it's a clear case of saving $25 worth of gas money. The same goes with my firewall.

BTW, the last time I visited a different auto service center to get my oil change, the technician tried to sell me on extra services. I'm no mechanic but really...when I ask for an oil change, please don't try to tell me that my brake pads need changing, that my tires need rotation, that my transmission fluid needs changing just so you can scalp me for hundreds of dollars--especially when the car's at 20k miles and I just did all 3 not so long ago!

I understand that for you paid AV software makes no difference, the user and their browsing habits are the #1 defense against malware.

But there are some features that even free software lacks that paid software does, like Kapersky's frequent definition updates and scanning compared to MSE's.

MSE is fine for me on my notebook, but for the family desktop I need something more robust to protect them from themselves.
