yep it's a great deal. hopefully other manufacturers will add to the competition and soon we will have gaming laptops with good price/performance ratios (when compared to desktops)

I do indeed have one, I stumbled apon it while looking on here one day. Was hard to believe it was on backorder for 2 weeks online, yet the local bestbuy had one for imediate pickup. Starting to wonder if they weren't supposed to do that because its still not on the sales floor and no one else seems to be able to find one >.>.

the bestbuy model only uses 1440x900 the higher end models will have the option of 1920xxx and 1680xxx. Also as you asked the difference will also be the cpu, the P-171XL FX will have Core 2 Extreme X7900 and the P-171S FX will have a t7250.

Edit: I just found this link and it said this at the bottom
"The Gateway P-Series is already available through the company's online retailers' network. The BestBuy retails stores will start selling it as of January the 13th. All the notebooks in the series ship with the pre-installed version of the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system." Looks like they weren't suppose to sell it lol, just so you guys know it is on the gateway site now, wasn't earlier today.

I was rather impressed with the cpu heat sink, it looked pretty beefy. There is a second fan and it is to the top right, to access that part looks like the whole case has to be disassembled. The cpu however should be rather easy to upgrade. Game performance coming soon, just finished up with my upgrading the ram.

Please keep in mind this cards performance is supposed to be on par with sli 8700m's and that this system is using one of the lowest
    cpu's available.

I signed up on this forum just to ask you questions about that laptop! :D

How is the casing??? Someone mentioned the following things to be concerned about:

    - Thin plasticky casing
    - Cheap, plinky keyboard
    - ****ty, ugly display

    I'm worried about those things.

Does the display have a glossy coating or is it a anti-reflective type? How the color reproduction/response times on it? I've seen some pretty bad displays on cheap laptops so I was afraid of that.

How's the wireless performance the Intel Wireless N chip? Have you used/tested that?

And finally, how's the battery life (9-cell!), gaming and non-gaming scenarios :). Just a time remaining indicator at max charge is all I really need :).

    Thanks!

not to mention it might not even be available at his BB yet. Seems BB is keeping a very short supply in stock of this model.

The screen is a glossy model, but its a very nice glossy screen, doesn't feel cheap at all. To make things easier to compare, this laptop feels more solid than the 2.2k$ m9750 from alienware that I was using. Same resolution on the alienware and it was glossy also and the light bleed was horrible. For the keyboard, it feels just like my desktop keyboard, what keyboard doesn't go click click click as you type 50wpm? The wireless card works wonderfully. Even though I don't use a wireless N router, it seems to have more power than just a A/B/G wifi. Battery time is decent, probably can get around a hour of gaming, maybe a whole short movie in. As for regular word processing and just web surfing, I'm just now testing. Started at 9:00 pm was 100% charged now 9:20 and its at 92%.

Thats very nice to hear! I'm trying to get my brother to buy it :) so he can stop using my system whenever he wants to game haha :).

From your battery indicator it sounds like it can do word processing + light web surfing for about 4 hours! Thats very nice!

Thanks a lot for your opinion, I appreciate it :).

hehe I wouldn't say 4 hours, but its been 1 hour now and it just hit 66%, so its 2+hours atleast. Seems about right, since I got right around 1 hour 30 min for a video.

since the ram uses a 1GB and a 2GB stick, does it run in dual channel still? I have another laptop with a T7500, and I'm planning to try and swap the cpus. The T5450 has a 667MHz FSB which is fine with the 667MHz ram, but the T7500 has a 800MHz FSB, so I'm wondering if dual channel works so ram wont end up being a bottleneck....
and how are the bios options? Is it customizable? The bios in Dell laptops barely have any options at all....

I did a test on dual channel on my one generation older laptop.

Write speed doubled. I verified it.

Not one tick improvement in cpu mark.
No improvement in any cpu related task such as encoding. Nothing.

Dont worry about it at all.
I do have a 1 generation older motherboard though so there is a possibility the next generation has it rolling.
