Hmm, this isn't that great...When I got mine, it was the same price and specs, except for a larger 160GB hard drive standard. Mine had the WXGA+, 8600GT, BT2.0, and webcam to come out to $850.

How does this compare to the deal last week?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=167555

I ordered last week's deal. They have not begun putting together my order, so I am wondering if I should switch.

    Last week:
    2G RAM

    this week:
    $50 cheaper
    Intel wireless
    9 cell battery
    120G hard drive

In both cases I would add WSXGA+, BT2.0 and Webcam, and run Windows XP Home. 8600GT is nice but I play only World of Warcraft so I do not have particularly high demands.

The 2G RAM upgrade seems to be worth $150 according to Dell, is it really worth that much?

A larger hard drive would be useful for my photoediting needs.

The extra battery life is nice but I do not like the fact it sticks out from the back.

The Intel wireless is very nice. I read it is a lot better than the Dell wireless.

What do you guys think? Which is the better deal?

Ok well tack on $100 for the 8600GT thats $699 then $50 for the screen ($749), $20 for bluetooth and $30 for webcam and you get $799. The larger 160GB HD is $75 more, but is NOT worth the upgrade. I would say this deal is about the same deal as what you got. If the deal isn't "that great" then yours isn't either. :p For $90 you can get a 160GB HD from newegg and then keep the 120GB as an external drive.

Also did your config come with a 9 cell?

Nope. A good deal on a 2x1GB kit of RAM is currently $70. For $150 you could get 4GB's.

I would say this weeks deal is better than last weeks. Upgrade the RAM yourself and save $!

Yep, mine has the 9 cell.

And I didn't see that it was $599, I thought it was $649 like it was when I got it. So yea, the deal is comparable. Also, I got the standard Dell wifi card, since I didn't think it was worth it to pay the $25 to get the Intel one. Configured identically, the two deals end up at the same price, so it all depends on what is more important to a person.

The shipping and handling / tax down at the bottom should be a link, you then login or register and you're able to choose shipping options.

If the processor has 800 FSB, does it imply it is better matched with DDR2-800/PC2-6400 RAM?

Shouldn't the prices be the same either way?

EDIT: I'm not seeing this pricing on there. The $599 config has a CelM, 1GB/80GB, and GMA X3100. The $649 config ups it to a T5470, and 2GB/120GB, but still no dedicated graphics.

I've been watching this laptop for the last 3-4 weeks. I think I remember there being comparable deals (with forced 2GB upgrades) when I first started watching it, but nothing in the last 2-3 weeks.

I had an identical system quoted through a dell reseller who does business with the company I work for. The quote he got (which they normally turn for profit) he forwarded directly to me (presumably as a customer relations ploy) with no markup. The quote I got from him evened out to about 20 bucks cheaper than this one (given calculation of cost of forced upgrade to IntelPRO). Which makes this deal about 20 bucks more than the absolute cheapest deal you could possibly get right now without knowing the right people.

I'll still probably order this one tonight. The company I would be buying through has a policy of charging 3% of the value over $500, making it only 10 $ cheaper. Plus I'm assured no conflict of interest.

The absolute bang up part of this deal, the thing that makes it so sweet is there is no forced 2GB of memory. If this was setup for 2GB of memory and had $50 dollars more off (I see $350 off Vostro!!!!!) that would be 50 dollars off 150 forced extra dollars that could have been used to buy more memory than the deal was set for. I love that part of this deal, and I love the OP.

Nope, the motherboard does not support DDR2-800.

I'm still getting $599 for the specs posted above. Just click on the Windows XP or Windows VIsta link then configure it.

This is a great deal, I am thinking about getting it with the 8600gt and upgrade the video card later.

    Two questions.

    1. Why this deal doesn't show up if we go directly to vostro page through dell.com? (when did this deal come?)
    2. How much tax can I expect on the 600$ deal?

    Thanks

...so I'm at the checkout screen, but I'm a little confused about the tax exempt status thing. How would I know if I'm exempt or not?

    Thanks,

If you're not sure if your exempt, then you are not exempt, and should pay tax. If you work for the government or are purchasing a computer for a non profit organization then you might be...
