looking at a ton of different ones and getting more confused by the day..

looking at linksys, d-link, netgear, buffalo, etc.... please let me know thanks

D-Link DIR-655 is perhaps the best, fastest and has the most features/controls of any router out there today.

My vote as well. DIR-655 is one hell of a router. Solid connection all the way. :)

What's the hardware of DIR-655? Just don't tell me it's reliable hardware :p

The DGL-4300 is the older model and may be cheaper, It to is a very good router.

Thanks for the link. Interesting CPU, still hard to verify if it's really that fast. Another problem is that there will probably be no way of installing 3rd party firmware on this router due to lack of documentation on the CPU and open code. Sure it has great Wi-Fi but 16MB RAM is not the best idea. With a fast CPU and 32MB RAM it could be a beast with i.e. P2P.

Another thing typical for D-Link from the article:
Neither the hardware nor the firmware are really good but I gotta admit it seems to be one of the best D-Links for years.

Yes. Not all of them as some use Broadcom 125Mhz CPUs that are too slow but i.e. WZR-RS-G54HP is a great one. 266MHz CPU, 8MB flash and 64MB RAM.

I'm certainly no expert, but I just bought a Buffalo WHR-G54S after doing a fair amount of research, and the thing has pretty awesome reviews all around. I got it for $35 from Newegg a couple of weeks ago. It has the ability to load third party firmware on it, although I haven't done this yet.

That's basically the same as Linksys WRT54GL but if I remember correctly with better Wi-Fi sensitiveness
for some reason (antenna connector  )
Still for $35 is really superb. Good choice.

Got mine for $25 a CC (after MIR) for the money they are hard to beat. Range & speed proformance seem to be good but haven't had it long enough for a full review.

The only difference I see is Wi-Fi radio chipset- BCM4318 in WHR-HP-G54 (that makes it identical to Linksys WRT54GL) and BCM4306 in WHR-G54S
