so i have an xbox 360 and i want to play on xbox live, but i need to conect to the internet, so i bought this ethernet cable to connect it straight into my router, and when i connect it, there is no internet going through, and on the router, there is no light that comes on like its supposed to on that port. i have another cable connected to the computer that works fine (light on too). ive tried connecting the ethernet cable stairght into the modem, same thing; ive tried it into my laptop, same problem. so plz help, i dont know what else to do. im pretty sure its just a standard ethernet cable.

ps its not the ethernet cable that came with the xbox 360, its a 50' one because my router is downstairs

Well, if you're not getting a light on your router, then there's no connection. I don't have an XBox 360, but it looks pretty straight forward to connect it to the internet. Did you try power cycling the XBox?

well for the cable, it says here on the box that it is:
    Cat6 premium network cable
    snagless 24k gold plated connections
    ethernet/token ring network
for 10/100/1000 base-t gigabit ethernet networks
2x the bandwidth for next-generation home networking
    exceeds proposed cat6 standard

and my router is just a regular wireless-g linksys wrt54g. so i think its either wrong type or defective lyke zx10guy said. waht do u guys think? because i have connected it like in those diagrams and i have turned on and off and restarted the router, modem, xbox 360 and everything. so i think ive isolated to problem to be the cable.

So, it says nothing about being a crossover cable?

OK. Sounds like it should be the correct type cable. Cable must be defective then.

If the light on your router doesn't light up when you plug the cable into to both your Xbox 360 and your router and they are both ON then the cable is probably bad.

50 foot is a long cable. There could be a break or defect in the wire anywhere inside the outer rubber protector.

Even if the device is not configured properly, the light on your router should still come up, unless there is a hardware problem.

so i got a new cable today and now when i try it it still doesnt work! omg im so mad right now!! so do you think it could be the xbox thats not allowing internet through? if so i find this odd because it was able to get internet when i connected it to my laptop, it just couldnt get past this one specific step, but it got past the first step anyways. or is it still the cable thats the problem? i rly have no idea anymore, im lost, and very pissed off right now

so tomorrow i might just buy the wireless network adaptor, and if that doesnt work...well...my xbox 360 is still under warranty so....you do the math

yup, thats right. now when i look at the heads for the cables, i see that the one i bought and all the other ones (like the one that came with the xbox, the one into the modem, etc.) are different. when i look closely, the one that i bought has the wires in it sort of up and down, not in a straight line. and for the other cables, the wires are all in a straight line. could it actually be that im using the wrong cable? it says that they are RJ45 male-to-male heads. well those were the only cables at the store when i went to buy it so i just thought that they were regular ethernet cables. but now today im gonna go buy the $130 stupid wireless adapter and then try that and if it doesnt work then im not sure what im gonna do cause its probably my internet.

PS.: did i mentioin that this stupid thing is rly stressful and annoying :( >.<

so i brought in my xbox 360 earlier today to get this problem checked out and to isolate the problem there, and it turns out that its not the cable thats broken. guess what is...my friggin xbox 360's ethernet port! i know! ridiculous! so microsoft's stupid policy is that the store cant give exchanges and stuff for free during the first year of the machines life. so now i have to call microsoft, tell them about the problem, and then send the effing xbox back to them for them to either repair it or send me a new one. geez i hate it when this happens!!! so now im probably gonna be xbox-less for the next few weeks or so.    so now im gonna have to play computer games more, but at least i get to concentrate more on my school stuff more now

I am having somewhat of the same problem but I know it isn't my xbox. I cannot plug my xbox into my modem directly and get a connection and when I put my modem to my router and my router to my computer and xbox it works for a while but then randomly cuts out. anyone know whats going wrong with it? I've called and I think it may be my router but I'm not sure.
