Today, I find that my connection is constantly dropping, even on the wired desktop. What is going one?! i am constantly having to reset the modem and the router. I have the latest firmware, and ive tried a reset. Ive never had this problem through the few weeks ive had it, but today its been nothing but constant resets! please can someone help me?! :(

    I have been having the exact same problems as you. Are you using the v5 version of the WRT54G? Either way you should call Linksys Technical Support

    i have version 6

    i just did the online chat support and she told me to do the following:

    1. log onto the 192.168 thing
    2. go to MTU settings
    3. set domain to manual
    4. enter 1300 for the value
    5. save settings

    than

    1. go to the wireless tab than advanced wireless
    2. set the following values
    beacon interval = 50
    RTS Threshold = 2304
    Fragmentation = 2304
    3. save settings

    currently, im not able to get onto the wired desktop, so i wont be able to try it until tmr morning. could you try this Vestige, and get back to me on msn?

    i did the following adjustments to the router, and everything seems to be going fine! havent experienced any dropped internet connections. Although this morning, when i went to adjust the router settings on the desktop, i had to reset the router. It has now been several hours and i havent had anything else happen. as a precaution, i went back to the linksys chat, and told another tech support rep. that i had adjusted all the MTU etc. settings and he said that i should have done a reset as well. Meh, i guess i will try that if i experience any more dropped internet connections.

    Hopefully this will help anyone out there who is having difficulties with the dropped internet connection due to the wrt54g v6! :)

    Sorry i didnt see this here, what was going on is, odds are you have a PPPoE connection. What that means is that your router adds extra information on the data that leaves your WAN port. Routers can only handle up to a 1500 TU sized packet. Now by setting it to a lower value you are leaving room to add this extra information.

    MTU = Max Transmission unit.

    You can tweak your settings so you can get the largest packet size without going over.

    I would say try 1492.

    but by them telling me to set the MTU at 1300, is that a good thing or a bad thing? im assuming a good thing since its at a lower value, i am giving myself a bigger leaway?

    Yes, but you are creating a smaller packet. you wont notice the difference really as a home user. But for a PPPoE connection i recommend 1492. gives you the largest packet size with room for the PPPoE header.

    Setting the MTU down that low just make the down load take a little longer. This tells me that they have a serious problem with v6, as if v5 wasnt bad enough. Take it back while you can and get a Netgear or Dlink.

    Linksys has reduced the ram and cpu down so low to prevent linux code from being loaded and now don't have enough for there firmware to work correctly. My guess as more than 1 users it will start locking up.

    -sigh- This has nothing to do with the hardware... Its has to do with the settings.... even a nice cisco router has to have the right MTU settings to work correctly.
