    Hello,
I have the above mentioned router, v7 i think if i'm not mistaken. It's hooked up to a computer through a wired connection and to a laptop through a wireless connection. When i try downloading stuff from rapidshare for example on my computer, i am able to download at the speed i'm supposed to get with the internet connection i'm susbscribed to, which is 50-60kb/s. However, through my laptop, the download speed drops to 30kb/s.

Is there any way i can fix this? Any settings i'm supposed to change on my router or laptop? Thanks.

How close are you to the router?

    Congrats on 4000 posts Patriot.

Consider resetting the router (unplugging for 30 sec, then plugging back in), and then try the laptop first. Also, if the laptop has an ethernet port, try connectiong directly to the router. This way you can pinpoint where the alteration is happening (i.e. in the laptop, or via the wireless, or maybe the router)

i live in a double story home, so i'm usually with my laptop on the first floor and the router is located on the 2nd floor.

    Thanks waterwizard :p

The distance from the router to your laptop could be causing the problem, how many bars of signal strength do you have on your notebook?

    Try waterwizards suggestions as well.

    24.0mbps, sometimes 36.
i'll try his suggestion too, thanks :).
so it's because of the distance?

It could be because of the distance but there could be other factors as well.

Have you tried moving your computer closer to the router and checking if speeds improve?

ok, i tried moving close to the router and the speed is still the same.
i'll try connecting to the ethernet port and see if it works.

Is your wireless secured? You may have a neighbor robbing your connection.

well, we've prettymuch eliminated every variable besides wireless vs wired. How old is your laptop/what model is it? I suppose it could be the wireless card. Maybe you could use updated drivers.

Is your router running in wireless g mode?

Also try changing the wireless channel to 1 or 9.

    ok

try to change the security from wep to wpa2- some routers/cards work better w/ wpa than wep(and many won't connect at over 54mbps in wep or tkip mode)

wep is not secure in the least.........

You've got to be close enough that Windows rates the connection at 54Mbps for maximum Wi-Fi speed.

The WRY54G v7 is one of the junk routers that Sisco has put out using the Linksys reputation. My experience with them is if you have more than 1 user at a time it performance drops off greatly. If your not connecting at 54 speed you will not get max download speeds. The only thing you can do for testing is see what speeds you get when your close to the router. If these are good then the signal degrade is due to distance or interference. As for security most prefer the WPA Personal AES encryption. You may also try using Cablenut and see if it can optomize your file transfer.

i tried moving close to the router where i'm able to receive 54mbps connectivity but the speed is still the same.

lol, no wonder v7 is not listed on their site.

Did you try running the CableNut optimizer. Get the aux that goes with it for more settings.

dd-wrt mini will run on a v7. But you have to be careful or you may brick your router. But the performance has been better on the ones I have seen.

    someone suggested doing this:

    Click on Advanced Wireless settings.
Change the Beacon Interval to 50
Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304.
Change the RTS Threshold to 2304
    Click on save settings.

    but it doesnt change anything.

i tried tcp/ip optimizer and it seemed to work.

just a quick question, will wpa cause slower downloads compared to wep?

    AES is more secure.
