I replaced my desktop computer with a Gateway 7510gx. It is my only computer. Now I am getting SBC Yahoo DSL with the wireless modem. My printer has a USB connection and I can get a wireless print server but I also have an USB external HD for backup. Is there a wireless way to connect to it?

    Thanks, David

I think connecting it wirelessly will be pretty slow and not worth it, using firewire/USB 2.0 would be alot faster.

Just plug it in when it's needed or get a USB 2.0 hub if needed.

Thanks for the information. I know that I have a lot to learn about networking and wireless. In my naivete, I thought there would be a USB to USB wireless link. I knew that it would be unique to a single computer but would be useful. I guess that it does not exist.

I just ordered a d-Link di-624-s router that claims to have 2 USB2 ports for NAS. I'll post back when I get it.

That Dlink router does seem to do the trick This might even work with a USB printer (probably not).

Well I got it and it doesn't seem to handle my 120 Gb NTFS disk well at all. Haven't tried FAT32 or calling dLink tech service yet, so there is still hope.

    Olyteddy,

What happens when you hook up your 120GB NTFS drive? Are you using a new external drive enclosure or is it the same one you've always used? The reason I ask is because some drive enclosure chipsets seem to cause some problems (Prolific chipset).

It takes about half an hour for the router to read and map the directories and when I can see the drive on the network I'm lucky if I can get 20 Kb transfer rates (Task Manager shows about .5% network usage). I get about 12.5% network usage from my 1 Gb Compact Flash Card. The 120 Gb is a Western Digital Drive model WDC WD1200BB-32DWA0 USB Device (111 GB) and has about 25 Mb transfer rate connected directly to the Laptop.

    Olyteddy,

That doesn't sound too healthy. Have you tried using a FAT32 partition and see how it performs? The problem may not be with the format type, but with the router itself. XP is fullycapable of recognizing a 120GB FAT32 partition (might have to do a DOS manual format). See if it works with FAT32, if not, you'll need to either get the router fixed or replaced with something else.

Trouble is, I've got about 80 Gb of music and video on the drive, and I'd have to temp it to my ancient Pesario K6-2 500 MHz desktop before I could re-format.

You can try Partition Magic, it doesn't need to format. It should work fine, but no guarantees.
