i want to stream audio from my laptop to my 2.1 speaker system that's normally plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
can i do this with a new sound card or can it be done with some sort of transmitter? any particular brand or setup i should consider? any suggestions to look out for from a canadian vendor would be a plus.

If you use iTunes as a media player, you can find a refurb Airport Express for a decent price that will do exactly what you're asking... pretty much hassle free.

something like:
Belkin Bluetooth Music Receiver F8Z492ttP
there are many BT to RCA/stereo recievers out there. try google.ca -
ideally im looking for something like this:
CREATIVE LABS ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Laptop Sound Card with Wireless Receiver Bundle : Desktop Accessories | Dell
however dell and every other US vendor selling this will not ship to canada and i dont know anyone in the US i could use as a shipping proxy
thanks for the suggestions guys but im open to more tho -
If you have no other options, you could always buy a $5 mini Bluetooth dongle to make Bluetooth solutions work.

You could always swap out your wireless card for a bluetooth+WIFI variety.
i.e:
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 | SpecReport
or
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 | SpecReport
or
Habey HB-NB037H | SpecReport
pair that with a bluetooth audio reciever and you are set plus you dont need any dongles sticking out of your computer.
