    Hello:

I've been a techy for 20 yrs and have been hooking up wireless since it came in. I just got a new compaq nc8430 laptop with the intel pro wireless 3945 built in. I have a linksys wireless g router. I have tried everything I can think of and cannot get the wireless to work. I have even uninstalled the network card and re-installed the newest drivers...nothing works. I'm pulling my hair out on this one. Does anyone know any issues with this or know what configuration settings will work with the router and laptop?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Alex

What Linksys router do you have? Can your 3945 card see other wireless access points around you?

What channel is your WRT54G set to? If it's on 6 or 11, try setting it to channel 3. Usually that's a pretty open channel.

I tried...all of the channels...funny it looks like it's connected (I've assigned it an ip then verified with ipconfig) shows strong signal strength to my wireless and yet I can't ping anything and of course no internet.

You know I've dealt with this crap before, and it always has to do with the laptops built in wireless. Each time this happened you could put in a pcmcia or usb wireless adapter and bam....good to go.

You don't have MAC filtering enabled on the router, do you? Have you tried reseating the card and it's antennas?

Is your firewall blocking your connection?

nope...no mac filtering and firewall isn't blocking either...oh...and it's built-in wireless not pcmcia...so there's no re-seating to do. I think i'm going to cut my losses and buy either a usb wireless adapter or pcmcia card....thanks all for your help.

Zandor, your built-in wireless is actually a small card usually accessible by a door on the bottom of your laptop. Look for the door with the sticker for your wireless card on it.
