    here's what i got:
-acer extensa 5420 (bought jan. of 2008)
    -d-link di-524 wireless router

    the problems:
-it all started once we did the xp "downgrade". first, would connect to network but wouldn't get ip. somehow, windows firewall was blocking it. disable firewall and it hooks up to network. but.......

-now only sporadically hooks up to my network when i turn on laptop. then, when it's hooked up it will drop the network for no reason. do "repair" or plain old reconnect and it hooks up again. and.......

-sometimes it will show it's not hooked up to network when it is. it'll say "not connected" and the little wireless icon on the bottom right will have the red x yet i can open mozilla and go on the internet!! weird!! and......

-i can't seem to get wpa working. did the firmware upgrade for router and everything seems good on that end. i just don't see that option anywhere when you first set up the properties for the network in xp. only asks for wep network key. i have service pack 2. is there another update??

    so......
needless to say, i'm not really using it for internet right now cuz of the diabled firewall. and i love the xp--it flies!! but, the wireless worked flawlessly w/ the vista for the first month. i'm pretty sure it's not the router cuz it's in the same place it's always been and has worked perfectly on new laptop (before xp) and wife's old laptop (2002). any advice/solutions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

I would say if windows firewall is messing with you, disable it for sure. Then go grab zonealarms free firewall. I have tried all the free ones, comodo, ..... and I have come back to zonealarm because it keeps the good in and the bad out, simple, easy, no issues, and always asks if I want it to. Once you have that set, do a restart and see what bumps up asking for internet and see whats going on. Have you tried reinstalling the wireless driver/searching on their support forums for the driver compatibility?

Most mfg are not supporting drivers for XP if the NB was for Vista. It sounds like a driver issue. If your only using MS FW you might as well go ahead and connect. It's test worst than any thing on the market today. I use Comodo and it works fine once you turn off the Defense+ feature. You have a FW built in on your router so your do have some protection.
