    wireless problem: card or router?

    I posted this a few days ago under the Lenovo section but got no replies. I'm hoping I'll have better luck here :)

    I've recently run into a puzzling problem with my T61p: It no longer recognizes the wireless signal from the router I have--even though it used to just fine (up until six weeks ago).

    The wireless router (Planex MZK-WG3000nx) works with three other devices with no problem.

    The laptop (has Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN plus bluetooth) still detects a wealth of wireless networks available around me. But not mine.

    The wired connection works just fine, so I've been stuck using a cable for the past six weeks or so.

    I was using Windows 7 64bit, then decided to wipe the drive and install Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. The result? :nah: . I kind of expected that; but I wanted to be sure the problem was not the operating system.

    The issue seems a tough one to google and I'm loathe to contact any support help--especially since Planex support is Japanese and they charge per incident :swoon:.

    Any ideas or other forums that would be good to check?

    Do you use hidden SSID?
    4965 has issues seeing networks with hidden SSID even when you type them in correctly.

    I don't think I'm using hidden SSID. I'll investigate further.

    To check for the SSID issue, you'll need to check on the router's configuration page to see if it's set to broadcast the SSID or not, if it is set to not broadcast, change the setting so that it broadcasts the SSID and see if that helps.

    If that doesn't seem to make much of a difference, then you might try using a plugin network card (usb or whatever) in your notebook to see if you can get it to connect to your router that way. If that works, then it's almost certainly the intel card that's failing. This could be the case even if it can technically "see" other networks around you. There is a great deal of difference between being able to snag SSIDs that are being broadcast (which is, basically, how a standard card recognizes strange wireless networks) and being able to actually negotiate a connection and stay connected.
