I've had trouble with a few laptops on our wireless network. To be specific, they are HP/Compaq NC6220s with the Intel 2200BG wireless cards, using Windows wireless zero configuration.

The laptops are not assigned to any one user so they are picked up at random and have 20-30 profiles on them. Every once in a while, someone complains that they can't login because the domain could not be found. They can only login if they have used the laptop before and their password is cached. The wireless connection initializes after they have logged in. This means no drives/printers are mapped.

I've upgraded/downgraded drivers, reconfigured the network authentication settings, done just about everything. I can't pin the problem down to just one thing. At first I thought it was drivers, then I disabled "authenticate as computer" and it worked on another, and sometimes, I log in wired, let it connect wireless, and then it starts working. Sometimes it doesn't.

I believe the problem is caused by the network card or WZC not starting before the logon screen appears. I've enabled the group policy which forces windows to wait for a network connection before logon, but that doesn't fix it either.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks,
    Daniel
