i lost you after your last period.....grammar is your friend.

If you want help you need to be more clear. Did you set up the xbox arrangement or did your brother? Is this a question of lack of knowledge, or puzzlement that something worked before and does not work now?

In other words should we be telling you how to do this from square one, or are we troubleshooting a connection you KNOW should work?

    sorry i wasnt very clear

i had this setup on the xbox before which i set up.

i am now tryting to do this setup from a laptop without wireless to a laptop with wireless, so instead of the xbox there would be the laptop without wireless connected to the laptop with wireless which is the one running ubuntu.

The short answer is: because you're trying to share a Windows internet connection with a linux box, which means that the computers are not going to do everything for you.

A quick google brings up a plethora of hits on various linux fora dealing with the same question, so you would probably get an answer, and help, much faster either on a Ubuntu forum, or in the NBR linux forum. From what I can see, you have to first enable internet connection sharing in the Windows machine, and then set up the linux machine with a static IP (although opinions seem to vary on that point, see here and here, for example). You could also work through some of the other hits on that google search, some of which appear to be Ubuntu-specific.
