does anyone know of a generic wireless configuration utility out for windows xp. I hate the zero utility because it likes to bounce you off networks a lot. If there isn't a generic one, is there one that will work with the intel pro wireless 2200b/g set thats in the sony vaio a190. thanks

i am rying to stay on a wireless network vs getting kicked off, i need a program like the one that comes built into windows. ex: is that hp's use an additional broadcom piece of software or wirelesss network cards themselves come with their own Software, not discussing drivers.

Ok...you just need to remove whatever comes with the machine then. Mine came with something from Atheros that was nothing but trouble. I removed it and use the Windows default now.

There is one from Intel for the 2200BG. Did you receive a CD with your laptop for the Intel drivers? I don't think Intel's webiste has any software/drivers for their wireless mini-pci cards since the OEM's provide that. I think it is call Intel Pro Set.

Everyone complains about the Atheros utility but I love it. It's great when on unfamiliar turf; being able to scan and automatically connect. I will say that the one problem I've had with it was that it wasn't picking up my router after I turned the SSID broadcast off. I subsequently turned it back on, connected with my Fujitsu, and everything was OK after that...eventually turned the SSID broadcast back off.

The Intel Proset is the configuration utility that comes with 2200BG.

    Latest version and drivers at

    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm

On my Asus M5N with Intel 2200BG miniPC wireless card I was regularly getting disconnected from my wireless notebook whilst in battery mode, but connection was stable in AC mode.
Pings to Access Point device (Minitar MN54GR4) were 1ms in AC mode but 16 ms in battery mode.

Went into Intel Proset/Adapter/Configure and changed power management from Auto to manual and now pings are 1ms and connection is now stable.

Seems the default (auto) power management mode for the wireless card in the centrino platform throttles the wireless card performance.
