I plan to buy a laptop here in the US and bring it back to Japan. Would I have to change any settings/hardware to have wireless connectivity in Japan?

Japan uses a wider range of frequencies for their wireless networks, so the network adapter will have to be able to support it. Most network cards (internal and PCMCIA) being made today will support multiple regions. Some cards will require only a configuration change through Windows, though others would require new firmware/software. Just read the manual that comes with the wireless card, and it should walk you through the procedure.
