are there any known issues with wireless LAN and vista x64 / xp x32 compatibility?

I can connect to my friend's wireless home network and even share files, but for some reason we cannot connect in games. The ip adresses are same except for last hex, the subnet is the same, no gateway, no firewalls, can ping.. just no gaming. anyone heard this kind of thing before and know what to do about it?

ps: we have tried both new games and older games like age of empires 2 and baldurs gate 2. no dice!
