I set up my wireless router over the weekend--and made it secure--but it occurred to me that as long as the cable modem is on the wireless network is always on. Yes, it's secured, but is this a good thing? Should I be turning the router or cable modem off when I'm not using the laptop ?which tends to be pretty much all day when I'm at work.) Am I cluttering the airwaves leaving them on?

If you turn off your modem or router, all you are really ensuring is that no one is accessing your connection while you have no need to use it...

I don't think it's worth the effort. You're not spending much to keep it running while you're gone and the air's already full of waves running around, you're aren't going to matter in the grand scheme of things.

    Agreed,
On some modems, they have a standby where all you do is press a button, and it stands by. It would be pretty rare to have someone access your stuff over night. Your computers are off, so no one can get into them. Even since you have secured your network, there really is no need to worry. The most someone can access at night is your internet if you leave the modem and router on. But they will have to crack your codes first.
Seriously, no need to worry. :)
