Yes, an Atheros AR5005GS in miniPCI-E format will work in your E1705. I currently have this card, which is an Atheros AR5006EGS card, in my E1705.

I just bought this card for my e1705:

Since I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, I know this will be a good match. I've read good things about it, but can't personally vouch for it until I get it installed. If you want a draft-n card, you'll also have to buy another antenna. You can find extra antennas at www.oxfordtec.com. They are cheap and easy to install.

My SparkLAN WPEA-124N card and extra antenna arrived today and the install was quick and simple. Unfortunately, the latest and greatest Atheros drivers just don't work well with Vista (WPA2/AES = incorrect network key), and I found quite a few people with the same problems. I downloaded and used some beta Atheros 5008 drivers posted on another website from last year and the card works great. 300mbps connection, saves on battery life, and no freezes or BSODs. I'm very happy.

*Edit* I downloaded the Atheros 5008X update from Windows Update (and also installed the Vista WPA hotfix - only available when requested directly from Microsoft) and to my surprise, I still have connectivity. I guess sometimes MS provides good drivers! ;)

*Edit2* I spoke too soon. The MS driver doesn't work for me. I lost my wireless signal after about 15 minutes and was unable to reconnect. I switched back to the beta driver and all is well. Oh well, hopefully other people have better luck with the MS drivers (and I'm hoping that SP1 fixes these problems).
