we have a wireless network. the desktop i just replaced is about 5yrs old. according to speakeasy, it was getting about 2.5 megs download. the new dell e1505, on the exact same wireless connection is showing about 1500. i was expecting it to be the same, if not faster. the old desktop is upstairs, the laptop is downstairs, about 5 ft from the router. any ideas?

The laptop is slower, as in CPU or wireless speed?
It could be the drivers on the laptop? Or perhaps some sort of interference from the laptop to the router? -
wireless obviously

Ok, moving it to the Networking and Wireless forum then, just in case I thought I read it wrong

Update your wireless card drivers from Intels website
And then update your routers firmware by going to the router's website (Linksys.com, Netgear.com, etc) and look for Firmware/Downloads -
i didnt see any updates for my new wireless card, and i updated the router a couple of weeks ago. any other suggestions. i dont understand why it would be slower. it is current technology on the same wireless connection as my (old tech) desktop.

Try this:
Type in: 192.168.1.1 like you would type in a web address to go to a website
Hit enter, and enter your username and password for the router. if you never set one, just hit enter.
Go into the settings, and look for Wireless Channel. They will be displayed as 1-11. Try changing the Channel to 11, and see if that works -
it will not take that entry. should there be anything before or afetr?
-
it wont take that address, should there be something before or after?
-
It should
MAKE sure you dont put "www" or "http://" or ".com" at the end
Just these numbers: (also the one i mentioned before try again)
Try these:
192.168.1.100
192.168.1.101
192.168.1.2
why is my new laptop slower?
