    Im paying for 5mb internet speed from charter cable. Speedtest.net shows i only get a download speed of between 1-1.5mb/s!! Can anyone lead me to some solutions to this problem?

    Maybe a lot of users happen to share your cable connection when you did the Speedtest.

    A couple of things to check. On cable modems the line connection must be made with less than 4 spliters, or it degrades the signal 2 much.

    Download CableNut and the aux pack. Then chose the connection that best suits your connection. See if that helps.

    it takes 8 bits to equal 1 byte. a 5 mega-bit line >= 700 kilobyes/sec
    And if your cable modem has "block sync" then it will perform to the speed that is coded in the account. If you are using alot of splitters, then yes the signal is degraded, if the signal falls too low, then the modem will not sync or will intermittenly drop connection. GL

    You may also have a lot of line noise on the cable, especially if you have old RG-59 cable in your house, and the same cable is carrying both cable and internet. That will severely limit your speed.
