so i just got alltel dsl at my house and im not getting anything near the speed i should get. i have to 1.5mbs service and when i try to run tests it says that i am only getting 300-350 kbs :( . i use to have dsl service from verizon at a differnet house and while it was 3.0 mbs i would get 1500 kbs without any tweaks. my friend who has cable can get 600 kbs at peak useage times. what give.

Have you contacted Alltel? Perhaps they can shed some light on your download speeds.

I would call your provider. Do you download or use your internet a lot? My internet puts us ona thing that is call "heavy user". Instead of gettting the paid for speed we are slown down. I hate my ISP but I really can't change since I don't pay for it.(It is my dad's)

Ask them if they put you on a "heavy user list". If they did I would suggest getting a new ISP.

What exactly do you use for your testing? Downloading from a slow server will obviously result in slow speeds.

Then again, you may just be far from the central.

If you are running a speed test, make sure you pick a location that is close to you. There is no point in running a speed test that's in Japan if you live in the middle of the US. :p

If you testing using your download speed, remember that a 1.5 MegaBIT/sec line will result in 187 kiloBYTE/sec since 1 byte = 8 bits. There are also alot of factors that can determine your actual speed, dont be quick to blame your ISP. If you always get 300-350 kiloBIT, maybe your only coded for a 384kilobit dsl line (most popular, cheapest). I always use speakeasy.net and its always consistant.
