i have researched to find a solution for the reason my linksys wrt160n wireless router, or my laptop's atheros ar5007eg wireless card may limit my ability to exceed 54 mpbs on my home network. (3 computers in it). i found confusing directions about firmware upgrades for the router and conflicting advice about changing setup on the linksys router interface. what's the skinny on that?

In order to connect to a wireless network at a speed greater than 54mbps you need both the router and the wireless card to be 802.11n capable.
In your case the router is fine but Atheros AR5007EG is 802.11b/g card- hence capable of only 54mbps ( proof). You need to upgrade your wireless card to achieve greater speeds.
