Ask around what everyone else gets. Here's a good site to test your speed.

If we assume you are on a standard 802.11G network, have a good signal strength, and there isn't an overload of users, the specs say you should get around 2.3 megs a second (with a max of close to 7 megabytes, or 54mbps). Obviously that is not going to happen over the internet with download/upload speeds.
In my personal experience at school I have had anywhere from 50kbps up/down to 500kbps up/down. Average I would put around 200kbps.
Like you said, however, it depends on a lot of stuff, so everyone could tell you something different. (Distance from access point, type of connection behind it, # of users, your personal computer, etc).. -
I can only tell you what I get. I get about 2MB/s download and 1.5MB/s upload. This is during a normal day. On sundays I can get up to 9MB/s but that is on a wired 1000mbit connection.
Connecting to the local servers and so on you should almost always get full speed (5-6MB/s on wireless). -
This may help you understand better. http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless/f/wirelessspeed.htm
