3G is a type of WWAN. A wide area network is just one that covers a very large area (compared to other types of networks).

You must have one of those amazing reverse "question mark encryption" filters installed on your internets.

i am confused that some laptop has 3G installed, some have wwan installed, both lets you use mobile internet (with a sim card). i dont understand the difference.

i have mobile internet 6 GB per month (with Three Network Australia), is that 3G or WWan?

it sure is WWAN, but check the speed, it could be 3G (up to 2Mbps) or 3.5G/HSDPA (7.2Mbps) cmiiw
edit: I think it depends on the BTS as well.

Three Network Australia would be able to give you that info
Most wwan cards are locked to a service provider , and laptops sold in the usa might not work with your local network
There is also Gobi wwan which is a new type of hardware that allows use world wide, with the addition of a sim card

I have the same plan. WWAN is a broad term, while 3g is more specific.

Anyway, the three mobile broadband is on the 3g network and your usb key is HSDPA capable.

hsdpa is the extended technology from 3G technology.
In only-3G capable device, you'll get the speed of 3G/UMTS
in hsdpa device you'll get more speed

but then again, it depends on the provider's BTS in the area, some may not transmit even gprs

so by this logic, if i put my three sim into my 3G iphone, i should be able to use the internet at 3G speed. it does not work. Is it suppose to work?

so which of the above wwan card should i get for my three's 6gb mobile broadband? i was thinking the 3rd wwan card is the right card since the first 2 is specific for vodafone. What makes vodafone so special? is vodafone on optus network or something?

I don't know if a Thinkpad able to take one, but a Sierra MC8781 (the one in my sig) are far better than those. can get max to 7.2Mbps
The vodafone one in the list only capable of max 3.6Mbps
edit: from the pic I think it's Sierra MC8775

If confirmed that Thinkpad can use one, you should get the unlocked card.

Gobi in Canada through Telus what do you know about support?
I have a CF-30 with the Gobi 1000 and don't have a clue but would sure like to discard my usb stick and have use of the Gobi modem. You seem to know quite a lot about this kind of stuff. I've phoned telus wireless support and the individual I spoke with had no clue as to what Gobi even was. I checked the IMEI number of for the Gobi modem for compatibility with the Telus network and it came back positive. So my question is have you heard of or know of people using the Gobi modems with Telus SIM cards. Thanks
