You want it for your computer or for another computer? If its not for your computer you will not need software, but a separate firmware for your router to do this. (if at possible at all). What router do you have?

I figured that was just it. I am not sure where the rules are drawn here so maybe a mod can step in.

This can only be done if you have access to the router, which means you own it and have rights to it.

Wireshark can do this but its a bit advanced to use. You might even to need to clone a port in your router.

Psh. Thats the hard way. Add your computer to the router as a DNS server and run wireshark on it! All connections get routed through your computer and then to the real DNS servers (Or something like that)

cain and able and then do an ARP attack to the network making you the false gateway. just dont be a jackass with all the data that goes through.

Setup your network so there NB's do not work. When they bring it to you, Install your monitoring software and grant access again. Most users do not change the main admin account PW (blank). Try booting in as admin and install the software.

Are we talking about Apple or PC notebooks?

Perhaps the first stop is getting the passwords to your kids' laptops - after all, I'm assuming that you bought the things, so technically they're your laptops that you're letting the kids use. Blue68f100's suggestion is probably the best way of getting the access you want - i.e., it's my network, and here are the terms you must abide by if you want to use my network.

On the other hand, the facts imply that there's a bit of ... bumpiness in the current parent/kid relationship (i.e., they've locked you out of the laptops, and you want to effectively spy on what sort of websites they're visiting), so perhaps there are other issues that need addressing? (Jeez, didn't think this'd turn into an Oprah episode, did we? :D).

That being said, if you're concerned about certain types of content, some routers have firewalls that can be used to filter websites based on IP and/or domain, so that might be an option.

Otherwise, other than getting the laptops' passwords, another alternative (and a little more savory than using an ARP attack on your own network) would be to get an old desktop and set it up as a proxy server between the router and the cable/modem connection so that everything gets filtered through the proxy, which will give you much more fine-grained control over what sorts of content gets in, and what does not.
