my girlfriend has a hp notebook with vista. she has always used the wireless internet and its worked fine. now every time she tries to connect to anything there are no signals found. Windows network diagnostics says "a cable is not plugged into the network adapter local area connection." Im pretty out of ideas so any help is appreciated.

Maybe she disabled the wireless? I don't know how it works in Vista, but in XP if you disable the wireless network, you need to go to your network places and re-enable it for it to be turned on again. Perhaps she needs to so something like that on Vista.

Also be sure that her network card is on, that determines if the wireless card itself is on or off.

As Stunner was saying...it sounds like the wireless adapter is disabled or turned off via a switch/button or keyboard keys on the laptop. You should make sure that it's turned on in both places...to enable it in the Operating Sytem itself...go to Network and Sharing and click Manage Wireless Connections on the left, click the wireless adapter and make sure it's enabled.

*The fact that the error message says Local Area Connection means that the LAN adapter card is enabled...that should be disabled if your using "wireless " and not an ethernet cable directly connected to the laptop.....

the switch on the side is turned on and I have enabled and disabled the Local Area Connection and it still hasnt been able to find the network. And I know the network is working because our other notebook works fine. Is it possible that her wireless card has gone out?

No I don't believe that is the case. Go to Start-->Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Expand Services on the left pane and look for WLAN AutoConfig in the list, along w/ DHCP and DNS Client services...make sure all are set to 'Automatic' and that they are all 'Started'.
