Can you directly access the Vista notebook from the XP desktop ( \\ Vista Machine Name )? Be sure to have a folder shared out from the Vista machine first.

Microsoft has spent hours with me no luck. A second level tech is supposed to call me today. I did see on my desktop vista that my firewall is Verizon Macafee
and that i have aol Macafee on my xp computers Macafee aol does not talk with macafee verizon. aol does not have macafee ready for vista and that is why i am using verizon Macafee with vista. Microsoft says 80% of networking problems is firewall. My notebook vista has norton on it free trial .My notebook can talk and do anything in XP MY XP computers can see vista and I get access is denied on all of them. Now I have taken off norton on my notebook and still have the same problem.

Un-installing Norton does not remove all of it's files. Symantic has a special program for removing it. Check on Symantic Support for the file.

Once you uninstalled norton the MS FW should have been re-activated. So you may need to setup MS FW to allow you subnet.

I here you and did use the norton tool . Microsoft called me today and still not fixed. I have a desktop in vista and it does not communicate with the vista notebook all my computers communicate xp to xp. vista to xp but not xp to vista, I now have set up one desktop xp with macafee and one desktop with vista macafee the manage in macafee sees both computers and says they are fine to share files but xp still gets access denied. I just got off the internet with macafee and they tell me it is a microsoft problem.

Make sure your vista nb is in IP4 and not IP6.

that was the first thing i did. It has to be something with the macafee and norton software. It may not be compatiable with vista in networking
