I have a alienware m5550 and a linksys router. My wireless internet connection is extremely slow. It takes forever just to load web pages. I took it to my girlfriends house and it did the same think. It says the speed is 54.0 Mbps and that the connection is excellent. Is there anything i can do to make it faster??

    Thanks,

    Phil

54mbps is the maximum speed that the router is limited to, not your Internet speed.

What is the speed of your actual Internet connection?

The signal may be excellent but if your Internet speed is slow, then its going to be slow, also make sure you have security enabled on your network so no one leaches off your connection.

The first thing you want to do is try to change the channel. I had experience with my internet connectivity being so slow. I change the channel and it gets better now. Channel 1, 5, 11 are preferable. Try them all before switching to others. Hope it works for you

I agree with usapatriot. Before you go changing anything, what is your internet speed?

you can use this link to test your CURRENT speed:

    http://www.cruzio.com/my_speed/index.html

It's fairly accurate from here in SoCal.

You can also go here http://www.speedtest.net then select the cone/triangle thingy closest to where you live to get a more accurate reading.

Remember those are the report the speed your connection is currently running at and not the speed you are paying for...

Of course there are the other issues of a badly fragmented HDD, your browser's cache being really full (delete your cookies & cache) It can get involved so I would run a speed test first.

Ok, now tell your girlfriend do the same test and what are her numbers? And try doing your test bypassing the router. We have to start eliminating errors. And from the numbers you have...they aren't that good.

last time i was at her house, i ran the cnet speed test and her speed was a whole lot faster than mine. i don't remember the numbers but i think it was at least 1,000 kb/s. She has a desktop by the way. I might just call mediacom and see if they know anything, although, they usually don't.

Ok yea if she has 1mb as her download speed it is significantly faster compared to what you have. You will definitely feel the difference.

I had problems with my D-link wire router out of the blue and what it was is I never had upgraded the firmware of the router. After I did it was normal again. It just a guess.

Wow, those are some abnormal DL/UL speeds. I had almost the same issue as you (one of my threads floats around here somewhere). I solved MY particular problem by:

    (in cmd)

    ipconfig/release
    ipconfig/renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

Last time I went to check my friends slow internet connection I realise that he got his computer infected. Did a netstat -a and i saw a huge amount of connection. Ping was crazy etc. So try pinging google and see if you get a constant ping.

So maybe you or one of your computer is infected?
